! Murcia Today – Spanish Airline Vueling To Allow Customers To Pay With Cryptocurrency

Date Published: 21/06/2022

One of Spain’s largest carriers will begin accepting digital currency in 2023

Spanish airline Vueling is set to be the first low-cost carrier in Europe to accept cryptocurrency as a form of payment when it joins forces with BitPay in January next year.

Vueling will initially offer customers the option of paying for their flights with 13 of the main cryptocurrencies on the market, including Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), Bitcoin Cash (BCH), Litecoin (LTC), Dogecoin (DOGE), Shiba Inu (SHIB).

Manager of Distribution Strategy and Alliances at the Barcelona-based Vueling, Jesús Monzó, said the move establishes the company as a “digital airline.”

BitPay’s Vice President of Marketing, Merrick Theobald, said that Vueling “recognises the potential of cryptocurrencies to transform the airline industry, making payments faster, more secure, and less expensive on a global scale.”

While the company may be trend setting in Spain, Vueling is by no means the first major company to begin accepting cryptocurrency for payment.

Just last month Dubai’s Emirates Airline hinted that it would soon allow customers to pay with Bitcoin and in 2021 the Simón Bolivar International Airport (Maiquetía) in Venezuela announced that it would begin accepting digital currency. Airport director Freddy Borges suggested that cryptocurrency would greatly improve the tourist industry.

“Just as Russian passengers arrived in Margarita, they will also come to La Guaira through Conviasa, so we must advance in these new economic and technological systems that can be accessed,” he said.
